Were now at an inflection point where these machines are ready to transform the manufacturing , logistics , and warehousing industries. While this requires some learning and adaptation, the integration process is often smoother than with other forms of automation.
The Internet is littered with articles about Industry 4.0. Such articles often leave out critical details, such as what is actually needed from the network. This use-case consists of some form of inbound transportation, such as a heavy goods vehicle, container ship or freight train, which delivers a pallet of goods.
What follows are reflections off of many of those facets, in the form of several different observations and thoughts: 1. The various savings from having manufacturing close — reductions in shipping cost, warehousing cost, lead time and supply chain risk, among others — likely sum to a value beyond 20% of the unit price.

This is the way of the future in manufacturing, warehousing and logistics. Automation — particularly in the form of robotics — is helping companies do more with less while keeping the lights on and their employees paid. The skills gap has gotten worse due to the COVID-19 pandemic and consumer demand has not abated.
Form follows function, not the other way around. These systems are not yet ready for widespread deployment in manufacturing or warehousing.
