A slowing economy and falling feedstock prices are putting pressure on commodity resinpricing in NorthAmerica. In Material Insights, senior reporter Frank Esposito explains the trends impacting PET bottle resin, polystyrene and PVC prices.
The upward swing of commodity resinpricing continued in February, with higher prices reported for three materials. North American polypropylene resinsprices saw the biggest hike, jumping an average of 8 cents per pound. PP prices had jumped up 11 cents in January, matching a similar move in PGP.
North American polyethylene resinprices took a surprising upward swing in January , increasing by an average of 3 cents per pound. Regional PET bottle resinprices also were up 2 cents for the month, according to market sources contacted by Plastics News. Even with sluggish demand, the industry has been active.
