In 2024, the Mold Technologies Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Inc. will be adding an additional award for the Apprentice Mold Maker/Mold Designer of the Year. This will be an annual award presented at the same time as the Mold Maker, Mold Designer and Mold Repair Person of the Year.

“We recognize excellence in those persons that are established in the industry,” notes division chair Scott Peters. “In doing so, we acknowledge that they have achieved a certain stature through the demonstration of their craft and skills. This year. we seek to recognize the Apprentice of the Year as an ‘Emerging Leader’ in the industry. It is an award that I believe is long overdue.”

The award, along with a $500 cash presentation and $500 in tooling or polishing supplies, is sponsored by PCS Company, a supplier of mold based, mold components, molding supplies and hot runner systems to the plastics industry. Derrick Jones, VP of sales for PCS, adds that the company sees this award as “a meaningful way to recognize people entering the exciting career paths of moldmaking, mold design and mold repair/maintenance. With so many products requiring plastic parts, this is an industry that continues to grow and develop.”

Nominations are open to ALL students, collegiate or apprentices, so long as they are actively involved in the pursuit of Journey-level credentials in one of the three disciplines: moldmaker, mold designer or mold repair technician.

While SPE Mold Technologies Division is primarily a U.S.-based organization, this award is intended for the international community. Apprenticeships and apprentice guilds have a long history on the global tool making scene and the Mold Technologies Division is hoping to receive nominations from all parts of the moldmaking world.
