Industry Vision

The Past: The evolution of the manufacturing industry in India in the last 75 years can be directly traced to the development of the machine tool industry. It has always stepped up supporting the growth of our country since the time of our independence, including the last three decades when India opened to the world by way of economic liberalization. The formative years of development of our industries prepared our economy for a globalized world. This made the machine tools segment more resilient while understanding the needs of the end customers. Technological development and innovation in the segment helped make the Indian manufacturing industry highly cost-competitive. In the area of metal cutting, for instance, it was very strongly supported by the cutting tool industry.

The Present: There is a newfound confidence in the industry with the growing scale and opportunities that the Indian market has to offer. There is excitement about the level of technology and sophistication that machine tools have started to achieve. This in turn has started to bring in tremendous productivity benefits for end customers who can leverage this to make himself cost -competitive and face the onslaught of global competition. With the government’s thrust on Make in India supported by the PLI scheme and private capital investment picking up pace, it looks like this industry is well positioned for the next phase of growth.

The Future: After initial hesitation to industry 4.0 adoption, the machine tool industry is starting to embrace it in a big way. Digital technologies like IoT, AR, VR, and automation will become an aid to the efficiency these machines offer to the end customers. In the area of machining multi-axis machines, combined with powerful CAM software and modern cutting tools have ushered in an era of high productivity. This should help India to gain leadership quickly in advanced manufacturing sectors like Aerospace, Oil& Gas, Medical, etc. Thus, the vision of the machine tool industry is really a vision of a strong India with a vibrant manufacturing segment.

The manufacturing industry is growing in India but is also beset with significant challenges.
