ABB Launches 3D Quality Inspection Functional Module

With customers demanding ever faster delivery of a products in a growing range of combinations, the need to keep track of quality in manufacturing processes is more important than ever. Manufacturers need to ensure they have the right technologies in place to ensure that products can be thoroughly checked whilst minimizing potential disruption and production line delays. In this way, they can make sure that their products meet the highest standards of quality and safety whilst also complying with increasingly stringent legislation.

ABB’s 3DQi new In-line sensor combines the accuracy and repeatability of structured-light technology with speed and flexibility of an industrial robot to inspect 100% of the manufactured parts.

The 3DQi In-line solution makes it possible to achieve high-level quality inspection during the manufacturing processes to control, detect and correct the fault where it happens. The solution forms part of the ABB goal of designing future production cells where robots will not only perform manufacturing tasks but will also simultaneously quality inspect the parts.

3DQi can be installed at the end of the production line to check the quality of all manufactured parts and offers a fast solution to inspect 100% of manufactured parts where required. A range of software plug-ins have been developed to add extra functionality to the scanner to support customer needs, including welding seam inspections and geometrical inspection.

The 3DQi optical scanner is the main component of the ABB solution and is used to obtain the three dimensional coordinates of points on the part surface. The measurement is performed without contact, using only structured light for the object geometry to create a digital twin with high density point cloud. The solution combines the use of 3D data captured with the 3D optical scanner for geometrical analysis together with machine learning algorithms for shape and aspects analysis. xEDR technology allows for data to be easily captured on black and/or shiny parts. The single camera sensor reduces the number of superimposed views and offers a faster configuration of the volume of work.
