The federal government has opened applications for the $16 million first round of its Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises.

According to a notice issued on 6 March, Australian small to medium enterprises (SMEs) are set to receive up to $25,000 in federal government funding that would help them replace or upgrade existing equipment to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.

These upgrades are expected to reduce the businesses’ energy use and manage energy cost volatility in the long term, contributing to the national government’s goal of reducing 2005’s emissions level to 43 per cent by 2030.

The energy efficiency grants will be distributed between states and territories based on the distribution of small and medium businesses across Australia.

The funding program seeks to assist small and medium-sized businesses that employ up to 199 people.

Projects that are eligible for the program may include an energy audit of a business site, the design and installation of energy-efficient equipment, measuring and monitoring of energy usage, and the commissioning or tuning of equipment installed.

Applications for the grant program will be accepted until 19 April. To apply, visit business.gov.au
