ABB has extended its family of machinery drives with the new ACS180 VSD for applications up to 22 kW. As a member of ABB’s all-compatible drives portfolio, it also shares the same architecture and user interfaces for ease of use.

The ACS180 brings reliability and performance for machinery builders and system integrators across many industries and applications. For example, the ACS180 can control conveyors, pumps, fans, mixers, and compressors across industrial sectors including food and beverage, textiles, material handling, and commercial applications.

According to ABB, it is an important addition to their machinery drives family that suits most straightforward applications. Moreover, the new drive delivers many of the features of the larger drives in the family. It provides high performance and functionality for machine builders needing affordable and simple-to-integrate drives options.

ACS180 features

Furthermore, it features a robust and compact design that offers precise control as well as scalability and flexibility. The ACS180 is ideal for controlling both induction and permanent magnet motors from 0.25 to 22 kW.

The drive housing is an IP20 enclosure with five frame sizes for cabinet mounting. It features a robust design and optimised airflow for cooling to ensure a long and reliable service life. To provide the functional safety essentials when designing and building machines the VSD has embedded Safe Torque Off (STO) functionality that brings the motor safely to a no-torque state.

This compact and easy-to-use inverter drive also offers excellent motor control performance without an encoder. It supports scalar control for effortless, robust, and basic speed control. For more demanding regulation of speed and torque vector control ensures accuracy throughout the speed range.

The drives interface with plant automation systems via built in Modbus RTU or using digital/analogue input and output control connections. Graphical icons make the built-in control panel straightforward to operate and reduce the need for language translation.

The ACS180 meets wider machine automation needs using its new-generation adaptive sequence programming to allow customisation of the drive’s functionality. This embedded controller provides a common approach to drive programming that tailors the drive functionality to suit its specific application.
