Major mining company BHP highlighted its nickel processes during Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida’s visit to the company’s facility in Nickel West, Western Australia.

The company showcased its operations covering the nickel sulphate processing plant and packaging, where the prime ministers saw BHP’s nickel products at the end of the value chain, heading out to export and global battery markets.

BHPs nickel sulphate plant is Australia’s first, serving customers globally, including leading auto and battery manufacturers in Japan.

“We aim to make our nickel products sustainably and we are actively working with our partners in Japan on supply chain transparency and identifying ways to lower carbon in the Japanese battery supply chain,” the company said in a statement

BHP said it has been a reliable supplier for Japan for more than half a century. The company opened its first office in Tokyo in 1965, with its first coal shipment sent in 1968 and the first shipment of iron ore in 1969.

The mining company currently supplies iron ore, coal, copper, and nickel to Japanese consumers and has established partnerships on a number of projects within its existing mining operations, as well as sustainability initiatives.

“We are honoured to have played a role in supporting Japan’s own economic growth, and its contribution to the global economy over decades,” BHP said.
