Panasonic Energy Co. Ltd. has announced plans to build a factory in De Soto, Kan., for producing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The $4 billion project is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs.

The company’s current U.S. battery manufacturing operation has shipped more than six billion EV battery cells, but it wants to expand its production of EV batteries as the automotive industry shifts to electric technologies.

“With the increased electrification of the automotive market, expanding battery production in the U.S. is critical to help meet demand,” said Kazuo Tadanobu, president/CEO of Panasonic Energy.

While the new plant will primarily supply batteries to Tesla, it is not limited to the automaker.
