Spiders used as mechanical grippers for soft robotics

Control Engineering

Robotics Insights. Rice University researchers are using deceased spiders as mechanical grippers, which could be used to strengthen the technology used for soft robotics and other applications that use grippers. Spiders’ grips are very much like hydraulics and allow them to control each leg individually. Robots currently use many different grip types, but they don’t grip the way humans do and the process is a slower, artificial process that limits what they can and can’t do.

Thin film growth technique is the result of microscopic holes

Control Engineering

Manufacturing Insights. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has revealed their methods behind creating a thin film and membrane. This is meant to allow a hydrogen-natural gas mixture to be used as a more sustainable, clean energy. This membrane is needed because when Hydrogen is converted to water, the reaction creates large amounts of heat and steam, causing extra wear and tear on metals (faster erosion, melting of the metal).
