Our Vision for the Indian Machine Tools Industry

The Indian machine tool industry will play a vital role in the manufacturing boost given by the central government through the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” schemes. Global companies in automotive, electronics, toy manufacturing & aerospace are planning to establish India as their manufacturing and export hub. The transition from internal combustion engines to hybrid / electric vehicles also has created new opportunities for manufacturing. This increased demand in the manufacturing sector will put pressure on the machine tool suppliers to come out with new solutions & models suited for these industries. The fact that both manufacturing and machine tools go hand in hand becomes evident with the fact that the world’s top manufacturing destinations are also producers of high-accuracy and sophisticated machine tools.

Right now, the Indian machine tool manufacturers satisfy around half of the requirements of the Indian manufacturing industry, the rest of the requirement is catered by imports.

To prepare the machine tools industry to deliver on the Make in India vision, it must rise above its current challenges. Primarily, the industry requires vigorous R&D efforts to improve its capabilities in the domain of high-accuracy tools as a high level of excellence in manufacturing cannot be achieved without advancement in machine tool technology.

The Indian machine tools industry is focused mainly on catering to the domestic market. It faces stiff competition from countries like China and Taiwan in terms of pricing and countries like Japan and Germany in terms of technology at the global level.

The adoption of the latest technologies to meet end-user requirements like the increased volume of production, cost reduction, lead-time reduction, and minimal human interference is crucial. The good news is that the Indian machine tool industry is already experimenting with the latest and disruptive technologies to drive innovation.

In the coming future, India through a focussed and innovative approach can become an export hub for machine tools as well.

Contributing to the Strength and the Growth of the Industry

Gühring is one of the worldwide leading manufacturers of rotary precision tools for metal machining. With more than 8,000 employees worldwide, 3,500 in Germany, and more than 70 production locations in 48 countries the company develops, manufactures and distributes innovative cutting tools. Gühring is present in all important markets: Customers in the automotive industry, the aerospace industry, or in general engineering count on trendsetting tools manufactured to uniform quality standards of the highest level.

Gühring has been the pioneer in the field of cutting tools & technology since 1898. With more than 900 patents in this field, Gühring has been a continuous contributor of the latest technology to the manufacturing industry. Each innovation from Gühring has resulted in improvement in machining processes.

In 1981 Gühring developed the first TiN-coated twist drill – a milestone for machining technology. These tools become the benchmark for the entire industry. Coated tools drastically reduce manufacturing costs. Meanwhile, tool life increases by 20 – 30 % on regular basis.

The co-development of MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) technology resulted in higher cutting speeds and longer tool life. More effective cooling, as well as the highest surface qualities, are achieved thanks to the pure lubricant. Workpieces and chips remaining dry saved the cost of de-greasing the workpieces as well as disposal of swarf and soluble oil.

The introduction of innovative tool geometries and coating types from Gühring has resulted in lesser cycle times, reduction in the number of tools, and lower cost per component which have aided customers in achieving better output from their existing production set-ups.

Gühring has in its range tools produced from basic cutting materials like HSS, Carbide to advanced high-performance materials like PCD, CBN, and Cermet. It is a trusted tooling solutions provider for all rotary roughing and finishing machining operations like drilling, reaming, thread production, Gun drilling, milling & boring. The current product range includes more than 4000 different tool types and 90,000 + individual products. Gühring caters to customers spanning all major industrial sectors like automotive, auto component manufacturing, machine tool manufacturers, defence, hydraulics, power generation, aerospace, implant machining, locomotives, precision components manufacturing, food processing, and so on.

Established in 1997, Gühring India is a 100 percent owned subsidiary of Gühring KG. The headquarters of the company is in Bangalore which houses a fully-fledged manufacturing facility and service center, with another service center and coating facility in Pune.

Business activities of Gühring India are trading of standard tools, manufacturing of custom-made tools, and providing related services viz., tool management, tool vending machines, tool reconditioning, Carbide sales, clamping pressure checking gauges, and servicing of hydro grip holders.
