Australian construction company CIMIC Group’s subsidiary, UGL, was tapped by Hong Kong-based electricity and gas company Alinta Energy to install a 35-megawatt one-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) facility in Port Hedland, Western Australia.

UGL will be in charge of the design, testing, and commissioning of the BESS at the Port Hedland Power Station, which comprises a battery storage and power conditioning system, CIMIC revealed in a news release.

The CIMIC subsidiary will also be in charge of extending the current high-voltage infrastructure in order to connect the BESS.

CIMIC Executive Chairman Juan Santamaria expressed his delight in the growth initiative.

“We are pleased to deliver our experience to this growth project – a major energy storage project in Port Hedland – for our client Alinta Energy,” Santamaria said.

He added, “Projects in high-tech, energy transition and sustainable infrastructure are a key focus for our Group.”

Doug Moss, managing director at UGL, said  UGL is a market leader in the design, construction, and operation of energy assets across Australia.

In order to deliver a safe and successful end for Alinta Energy’s Port Hedland project, Moss said he is looking forward to continuing UGL’s cooperation with them.

Work on Port Hedland has begun and is expected to be completed in late 2024.

Alinta Energy has development approvals for a future expansion to a 60MW two-hour battery storage system and 90MW AC solar array.
